Math 555: Differential Equations I

Lecture Companions

On this page you will find lecture notes corresponding to the sections of the book that we cover during class. These are not meant to replace the book; rather to supplement it. You should still take notes during class.

Chapter 1: Slope Fields

Section 2.2: Separable FODE
Section 2.2: Homogeneous FODE
Section 2.1: Linear FODE
Section 2.6: Exact Equations and Integrating Factors
Section 2.8: Picard's Iterative Method

Section 2.7: Numerical Methods

The lecture companions above utilize the SageMath programming language (links to come soon). The code cells are embedded using the SageCell Server (another link coming). They also use MathJax to typeset the math (yet another link coming).

When working through these notes, you must run the code cells in order from top to bottom. Usually you can do this for each example without starting from the very beginning of the page, but there is always a positive probability that I messed something up.

You may also change the code to try your own examples!

This is the main reason for writing these notes out in my own (very bad) html, rather than using Jupyter notebooks like I have in the past. (See here.)

Constructive criticism is welcomed via email or Slack.
